THEY GET ON YOUR NERVES

I Stop Those Annoying Noises In Your Home THERE is nothing more irritating than creaking doors, rattling windows and squeaking locks. These noises are harmful to the nerves, for there is never any real rest m the home.

TPHERE are some people who can 1 never close a door quietly and "drop" rather than "put" things down. A piece of baize or felt will deaden any sound if it is glued on to the bottom of the tray. Another noise to be contended with Js that made by a sewing-machine. Here again a thick piece of felt will be found just the thing if it is inserted

under the legs. Perfect silence will reign at the table Ut-felt mats are used fox* the dishes, etc., also the use of such mats will fc preserve the polished surfaces against hot plates and dishes. The new rubberized sinks are responsible for less noise — and, incidentally less breakages — m the kitchen. With the ordinary type of sink it la difficult to wash up without a certain amount of noise which is very trying to the nerves. But the new rubber linings which have been invented are proving! a real boon, especially m the small house or flat where sound will penetrate to every room. The number of daily "squeaks m a house are too numerous to cover here, but all may be eliminated. The oil-can is a great antidote and there are few squeaks that will not respond to this treatment. Sometimes the wood has warped so much that the services of a cabinetmaker are necessary, but it is well to try the oil cure first for a period of, say, ten days, before incurring this expense. A thin oil or paraffin is the best to use. Mniuiiiiimmiiimiiimiinmiimiiiniiiiimiimmiiniimmiiiimiimiimiiiiifiiiii;

Squeaking door-hinges, dresser drawers and beds are all matters for oil-can treatment. A daily rub with an oily polish will often stop that creaking noise m furniture.
