TURNED OUT A DARK HORSE
Seifert Surprises In Golf Champs. (From "N.Z. Truth's" Palmerston North Representative.) Golf, like Rugby, cricket and most other sports provides many
a surprise. WITH such players as J. Harold "* (Wanganui, an ex-New Zealand champion), D. C. Collins, the Wairarapa Club champion, G. Richmond (Nelson), A. E. Ekstedt, who won the Manawatu open championship m 1922, 1923 and 1926, and W. A. Keeling, this year's Manawatu Club champion, competing m the Manawatu open championship, who would have given A. Seifert a chance of annexing the title? Yet such was the case. The surprises began when H. Blyth, of Shannon, and late of the Leven Club (Fifeshire, Scotland), ousted J. Harold m the first round. Blyth had a handicap of 6 m England which the Shannon Club generously increased to 10, but the first day Blyth competed at Palmerston it was decreased to 8 and later to 2. Blyth was m his element on the windswept Hokowhitu course, but not so Harold. Another surprise i
m the same round was Richmond's elimination at the hands of H. H. Hutchison, a Manawatu golfer. D. C. Collins survived the first round, only to go under to H. A. Black (Lower Hutt) m the next round. W. A. Keeling and H. A. Black met m the other semi-final, but Black was considerably off form and was no match for Keeling, who won 6 and 5. Keeling, who only recently wrested the Manawatu club championship from Ekstedt, was favorite at the commencement of the final, but his chances of emerging the winner were spoilt by two badly played holes right at the start of the final. He took the next two to stand all square, but his play lacked the consistency which marked . the veteran A. Seifert's golf. Seifert's steadiness won him the, match, 4 and 2, and with it the championship.
