In Joseph 's Coat
JOSEPH EDMEADES' taste in J delicacies runs to- asparagus. As a waterside worker in Wellington perhaps the remuneration frorn his labors was insufficient to satisfy his desire in this direction. At any rate, Joseph thought he would get over the difficulty by helping himself. The Union Steamship Company of late have been suffering the annoyance of petty thieving from their Wellington-Lyttelton ferry steamers and asked the assistance of the police. They disliked to see their oranges and other table delicacies disappearing. Last week a detective visited the s.s. Wahine at her berth and watched the men at work in the hold during cargo-shifting operations. The detective ultimately found a bunch of asparagus in the pocket of Joseph's coat and Edmeades found himself haled before Magistrate Riddell in the Wellington Police Court faced with a charge of stealing goods to the value of 1/4. A little corrective medicine was handed out in the shape of a 40/---fine, with default fixed at 14 days.
