Well-known Jockey For Trial
A CCENTUATED by an accompanying thunder-storm and heavy rain, a dreadful tragedy, which resulted in the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Short, 72 years of age, occurred on the Manukau Road, Epsom, Auckland, on the evening of Monday, September 26. \ The old lady and lier grandson, Leslie Howard Hoskings (10), at a little after seven p.m. on the evening of the fatality were making to board a city-bound tram at the stopping place at the corner of Owen's Road, when a big touring-car loomed up from behind the tram-car. Travelling at a rate alleged in evidence to be between 20 and 30 miles an hour, the car struck the elderly lady and her young grandson. As a result of the injuries
she received, Mrs. Short died about two and a half hours later at the public hospital. The boy escaped death, but is still an in-patient of the hospital suffering from leg wounds. In connection with the disastrous affair, Walter Scott Bagby (20), a wellIt no w n Auckland jockey, now awaits his trial at the Supreme Court on a charge of manslaughter. Through his counsel, Lawyer Allan Moody, he pleaded not guilty at the Auckland Magistrate's Court last week when the evidence for the prosecution was taken. A large number of witnesses were called, including the boy Hoskings, who was carried into court and propped on a table for the purpose of giving his evidence.
