Loved In Vain
AS an ardent and desperate lover, rt James Newald (38), of Parnell, Auckland, ranks with the ancient classics. It was the bitter pill of a lovequarrel that set the idea of suicide surging through his brain until — overwrought with disappointment — he finally decided to end his life. This he endeavored to accomplish by consuming portion of the contents of a certain bottle and when Constable Smith was called on the scene he found Newald in a bad way. After a week in hospital, he appeared at the Auckland Police Court on a charge of attempted suicide. A statement he had made to, the police told. the whole story. It was because Newald thought his lady friend had left him for ever that he settled on the idea of doing away with himself. "I promise that I will never do it again," he told Magistrate Hunt, who remanded him for a few day* until his father could take him'-in; charge. ■' ..' „ S Y:' .
