Oh, Harold!

"1 HAVE no hesitation in putting * a solid fine on a man who owns his own car," said Magistrate Hunt at Auckland the other day in dealing with Harold McCloughen (24), who pleaded guilty to being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car on the evening of October 12. "But with a wages man the position is different," the S.M. added. McCloughen and three other men had been on a little tour of the suburbs and at Onehunga, which was included in their itinerary, they had a few drinks. The trip came to an abrupt and somewhat disastrous end by the car smashing into a transmission pole on the Great South Road, near Penrose. As a result, one man was admitted to hospital buffering from concussion, while McCloughen and another man named Frank Goddard were called upon to answer charges •t the Auckland Police Court. McCloughen, a community busdriver by occupation, had his licence cancelled for two years and was given 14 days to pay a fine of £20, in default three months' imprisonment. Goddard, who pleaded guilty to charges of being drunk and driving a car without a licence, was fined 6/- and £1 respectively.
