DRESSY DECEPTION

T*HERE is much more m the new frocks than meets the eye. The fact that they still retain their strict simplicity does not alter the fact that they «re extremely complicated. "THIS is rather depressing news for the home dressmaker, for she will not be able to reproduce the same effect. She can, however, comfort herself with the knowledge that a fairly plain frock may be smartened up by a few deft touches here and there. For some time past now, the simple little garments we have been wearing have enabled most of us to "run up" a drees m a few hours, and we have relied on trimmings and accessories to give us that "chic" appearance, But no longer can we do this, for quite apart from the fact that the ne\V dresses conceal a hundred and one little artifices, they are to be lined!

For years now we have enjoyed wearing unlined frocks, but underslips of ninon and georgette are gradually making their way back, and this will entail extra work m making a frock.

Despite all these drawbacks, however, it must be truthfully said that never before have fashions been bo charming 1 .

Provided one is clfever enough to make these modern frocks, they will be well rewarded for all the extra work entailed.

CURRIED APPLES. — Take six ?.ppleß, one teaspoon curry powder, 3ozs. brown sugar and one lemon. Remove the cores of the apples and place them m a baking-tin. Then mix the sugar, curry powder and the grated rind of half the lemon and fill the cavities m the apples. Next squeeze the juice of the lemon into a gill of water and pour this into the tin. Bake In a quick oven till tender.

SHAMPOO. — Dissolve loz. carbonate of soda m a quart of hot water, add %pz. soap flakes, loz. of spirit of wine or eau de cologne. Bottle the mixture and shake well. Apply to the hair with a sponge and rinse thoroughly m warm water.

FACE CREAM.— Ioz. of oil of sweet almonds and %drm. of white wax and spermaceti. Melt these ingredients m a china pot placed m hot water. | "When melted remove the jar from the water and stir till it becomes smooth, then add gradually loz. of rose water to which you have added a few drops of simple tincture of benzoin. You can buy the latter from a chemist. Stir the mixture well and it will be found a non-greasy and beneficial cream for the complexion.
