Oh, Springtime!
. j ■ I SYMBOLICAL of springtime will be i ° the entertainment offering at the ' Regent Theatre, Wellington, to-mor- \ row (Friday). "'-*-* In order to represent the joyous V spirit of spring, the management bas gone to some trouble, for the stage representations, along with the plctoriiiiiiiumtii ial portion of the programme, all
breathe the true spirit of this season of the year. A dainty spring- ballet, nimbly tripping it to the rhythm of music that tones m harmony with the occasion, stage settings and surroundings all blending with one accord, faithfully interpret that which the management set out to achieve. Paramount studios provide the star film to be screened for the delectation of patrons. This is "The Whirlwind of Youth," with Nancy Hawthorne, Lois Moran, Donald Keith and Alice Mills m the leading roles. * # # Delightful Songs COLUMBIA Dlss3— "My Mother Bids Me Bind My Ha.ir" (Haydn) and "Who is Sylvia?" (Snakespeare-Schu-bert). Sung by Dora Labbette, soprano. — We can easily forgive Miss Labbette her lack of power when she replaces it with so much charm, such sweetness of tone and such freshness of voice. Her vocalism is ideal for this class of song. The beautiful simplicity of both the melodies calls for a gracious and easy enunciation. The words must be made perfectly clear, for they are as great as the settings. And, since the songs are so intimate, there must be a warmth — a friendliness, one might almost say — behind the singing. Dora Labbette provides all these and more; for she brings, m addition, a long study of this type of ballad. This is distinctly a record to be recommended. # * # Opportunity Here DECENTLY there was a lucky week m Hollywood for "thin, starved" men, women, children, horses and dogs. The casting office at the Paramount studio was asked by Victor Fleming, director of "The Rough Riders," to supply the following for a Cuban sequence of the picture: Five old men m rags; fifteen thin, starved women m rags; twenty thin, starved children m rags; twenty- five thin, starved Cuban soldiers m rags; four thin, starved horses; three starved dogs. 4 The thin, starved humans and animals were well fed and well paid for their work. None of them had to supply their own rags, the studio taking care of that part of the businesß.
