WILL NEW ZEALAND BE THERE?
Boxers and Next Year's Olympic Games At Amsterdam
New Zealand was represented at the last Olympic Games by Charlie Purdy. Shall we be represented next year?
TpHIS question is exercising several J. minds at the present time and m one quarter It is being much diacussed. "N.Z. Truth" ventures to predict that New Zealand will be there. Earl Stewart has been giving the subject considerable time and thought and he is preparing a report to the council. The report is due to come to light m the very near future. There is no doubt that the standard of boxing at the Invercargill championships failed to reach the high level that was anticipated. Only two lads stood out as likely candidates — Ted Morgan, lightweight, and Alf. Cleverley, middleweight. These two will probably figure largely m Stewart's report and the
fact that Earl has watched the boys m Wellington lately is significant. Neither at the present stage Is up to the necessary standard, but that Is not to say they will not reach it. Lies. Murray, a more than ordinary judge, expressed the opinion that it would be necessary to send a puncher to Amsterdam. Both the boys m the running for the trip can punch, with Morgan undoubtedly the mightier hitter. One of the few of our boys to concentrate on the body, Morgan has a left rip that hurts. Cleverley can punch, but he adopts the role of boxer. For a boy of his weight, he is extremely fast, both with his hands and his feet. But just whether he has enough pugnacity is another matter. The report to the council will be awaited with interest.
