PALETA'S CLASSIC VICTORY

G.N. Guineas Outsider Shows Hastings Form Was All Wrong

(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.)

When Paleta suffered defeat by Doree m the Hawkes Bay Guineas it did not look good business to undertake a journey to Ellerslie with the Son of Leighton to tackle Laughing Prince and Co.

TN fact, punters voiced their opinion of the Hastings defeat by supporting Paleta to such meagre extent m the Great Northern Guineas that he never threatened to be anything else but the outsider of the field of seven runners.

Despite the fact that most people believed that Roy Reed "stole" the Hawkes Bay classic on Doree from Paleta, Trainer W. Dwyer was not one of this number

Hi s explanation was that an error was made m the choice of the "bit" for Paleta, which left his rider somewhat powerless to control the son of Leighton that day.

Whether there is anything m the story or not, Paleta's defeat a t Hastings hardly suggested victory among the improved talent at Ellerslie a week later over the same distance.

However, the glorious uncertainty of the turf again evidenced itself, for once Paleta got to the front m the northern classic he hung on to the "possie" and silenced all claimants for

the £ 10D0 stake attached to the victory. Rider Watts was certainly not going to have it said that he was caught napping. He rode for dear life and his mount lived up to the great opinion Trainer Bill Dwyer always held of the son of Leighton Catalini, which won four races out of five starts as a two-year-old' m New Zealand, and then took on Sydney — to meet with some affliction on the trip.

Pal etas victory hardly convinces "Truth" that he will make a stayer, but the fact that he cut out the mile m 1.39 4/5 gives proof that J. A. Todd, of Wanganui, made a sound purchase m his first effort as an owner. The sectional times recorded m Paleta's G.N. Guineas were: One fur., 14 1/5; 2 fur., 25 3/5; 3 fur., 36; 4 fur., 48 4/5; 5 fur., 1.1; mile, 1.39 4/5. It was the most important event yet credited to Trainer Bill Dwyer, and does something to place him on the map as one of the younger school of successful mentors.
