FLUKED IT!
And 'Twas A Good One Too
Without a ride m the race and then to fluke the winning mount is good fortune indeed. KrET such an incident took place at J 1 * Ellerslie on Saturday last, -the race lln question being the Mitchelson Cup. . Bert Ellis had been engaged to- ride TTe Monanui m this event, but a fall at Awapuni put him into hospital. This left Te Monanui without a rider and he was so placed when Walter Graham arrived m Auckland on the morning of the race. He had two m mmd — "Snow" Morris and Sam. Henderson — and both good boys. The vote went for "Snow," who had jjjrevious experience with the horse, 'having ridden him m the autumn. The story having gone so far, had, of course,, to be completed — and the horse and boy completed it properly. Always well placed, Te Monanui was out on the turn and finishing !ln his best fashion he got up and beat 'Mask by half a length. The fluke ride netted Morris — well, a ■ goodly sum. Jockeys do not like publicity over their earnings.
