. { AND his "gentlemen" partners m such ventures will do well to assure themselves that their temporary affinities have attributes m keeping with anticipated circumstances. Otherwise, they will fall into the painful company of Retribution— aa did the doubtful hero of this narrative. The story is a somewhat startling exposure of certain activities among Dunedin's youthful "smart set." Startling, because the southern city is reputedly law-abiding and comparatively undisturbed by the lapping of a crime-wave along its social shores. But beneath the apparent crust of respectability there lies hidden the forbidding element of secret vice and the fact that a recent party at Broad Bay failed to Batisfy the motives of its promoters was due to the moral fibre of the girls rather than their entertainers. Although the investigations of "N.Z. Truth" resulted m the identification of all concerned m the story about to be related, it is solely out of consideration for the' girls that names are withheld from publication. There can be little question as to the ultimate object -of the party, as one charming specimen of debonair youth, with- disarming candor, informed the company that things m general would have been much "brighter" had the presence of a certain delig-htful young matron been denied the party. As this particular lady combined unusual personal charm with a clear sense of decency and broad-minded sportsmanship, the remark of the "gentleman" m question appears to be all the more sinister.
