FOR STEERING

Double Purpose Headlamps Early this month we published an enquiry from a reader who thought that some system might be fitted to cars which were to be used, m muddy country, to- indicate the actual position of the front- wheels when the car was sliding along in< a rut. WE doubted, thel possibility of such a fitting becoming popular, but asked if any of our readers had used or seen anything of the kind. In an, interesting letter "H.N.C." (Wellington) tells us that he is using a pair, of Wilson swivelling headlamps, -which were described m "N.Z. Truth" m October last year.. Our readers "will remember that this is' a New Zealand invention, and is specially adapted for our winding roads. ' By a simple device, the lamps are made to turn with the steering," so that the beam of light turns round the corner as the car swings, instead Vof following the car as it does with the ordinary fixed lamps. "H.N.C," however,; points out that these lamps can also be made to serve the purpose of steering indicators, if, as on his car, the lamps are, m such a position that they can be seen by the driver. • . '■< W e do. not think that this feature interested the inventor when designing, the lamps^but since the swivelling device is undoubtedly' well worth having for its own sake, anyone wishing for a steering indicator could do worse than At a pair of Wilson adaptors and they would then get two gadgets m one.- • . _ •'■'■.■'■''■ '•''.'. ' \ . New -and inexperienced drivers should keep their cars off .badly-congested roads. ;./ ' Jt does not pay to. have, the valves ground when the stems and guides are worn/ Have them replaced.
