MAIDEN PLATERS AND HURDLERS

Quantity, but Little Quality at Woodville , i . In the Maiden Stakes and the Hack Hurdles at Woodville tomorrow there will be any amount of runners.

TO. start off with there are . eighteen engaged In the Maiden Stakes^ It would not hurt the race m the least to have that number reduced to eight. Quite a number of them have been trying to win a race for years, and on what they have shown they will still be trying this time next year. Included m the list nominated is one Eloquent, which was once noticed m a similar race at Ashhurst. A little improvement on that running and it would take some beating. Greengrocer is getting better every day and the English horse must soon get out of his present company. Kalos has pace, but has not had neither the luck nor the right riding. i Mister Gamp Js still , eligible, for

such races — a fact that was known to very few. Favored with the right assistance three that, will be galloping fast at the finish are ' Eloquent, Greengrocer and Kalos. The hurdlers are a very "sandpapery" lot, and to have to ride some of'the brutes just shows how game our hurdle horsemen are. • Anchor won at Foxton and gave an impressive display, and on this he should be the favorite. Axle has a liking for the course, while big Kalakaua should be able to jump. It ls known he can gallop, but only when he likes; Down on the minimum is one John Nod, which is reputed to be a smart jumper with plenty of pace. Anchor, however, has the form to his credit.
