PAYING THE PIPER
CLIFFORD OSWALD BATES ** should have thought of his wife and two small children before he converted just on £60—belonging to his employers, Electrolux, Ltd.—to his own use, ruled Magistrate McKean m the Auckland Magistrate's Court last week, when Counsel Quartley pleaded for supression of Bates' name. The accused, who pleaded guilty, was m a good job at the moment, he said, and wo.uld be able to make restitution from his wages, but if his name were published he would almost certainly lose his job. He was only 24 and his eldest child was two years and nine months old, while his wife had been m a delicate state of health practically ever since her marriage. But the S.M. was adamant. He - refused the request for suppression and admitted Bates to probation for twelve months, ordering him to make restitution at the rate of 17/6 a week. .(IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUIIIIINIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIUIHIIII.
