LIZZIE AND THE ROAD HOG-AN
(From "N.Z. Truth's" Special Auckland Representative.) *-_ IZZIB, ambling along Eemuera Road, Auckland, the '■^Ij i. other night with the idea of turning down Narana,- / SyLy Avenue, was causing a certain amount of agitation "Sl underneath lier bonnet. *' jfßfcr . J ust as her^owner, Charles Roberta, was m the act of swinging the wheel over, he noticed a 'car, with another one be-' hind it, coming up the road towards him. Roberts might have stopped and allowed the cars to pass; but Lizzie, with the perversity of her sex, took the crankhandle m her teeth, as it were, and scuttled across m front of the oncoming car like a mule with a bee on its back, "cutting" the corner and missing the other fellow by inches. "Here's one of those dread ful road hogs!" cried Mrs. Roberts m the excitement of the moment, as her car— having Just been missed by the skin of its teeth— stopped dead with a screaming of brakes. While Lizzie continued her way unperturbed down the " avenue, the "road hog's" car backed, turned and followed; overtook her, quietly noted her number and drove away. Lizzie wrinkled her radiator, won dering m a puzzled way what the "road hog" was up to. , She was spared the pain of finding out, but her owner got a shock— to put it mildly-— when he answered his name m the Auckland Magistrate's Court last week and found that the "road rog" was none other than G. R. Hogan, the chief traffic inspector. S.M. Salmon, after listening patiently to what everyone had to say about the ; incident that might easily have been an accident, decided that Lizzie's owner had cut the corner and . fined him£ 2.
