THE DERBY STAKES
Looks To Be A Orie-Horse Affair . (From "N.Z. ■ Triith's".- Special Christchurch Representative.) For. the first time, the New Zealand Derby stakes will be decided under the auspices of the New. Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club at Addihgton. ,
•THE old-established classic, was in--1 stituted by the. New Brighton Trotting Club m 1914. Owing to* its cramped financial 1 resources, however, and the heavy loss it sustained annually -by .keeping the classic on its programmes the club thought it wise to hand it over to the premier. 1 club, whose dates and itinerary were more suitable for furthering th'e interests of contests for three-year-olds. ' . Since taking over the event the N.Z. Metropolitan Club has increased the stake considerably, and the race how forms one of the attractions at the club's big car- • nival. . . • ■ • . ; -,•■••. . ■ Unfortunately, Thursday's race will I not excite the interest it would have I
done had Acre and Haydock been m the event. . . There is little doubt that both Acre and Haydock 'would '.have made it in* convenient for Richore, whose: track work has not been as good as it might have been. •/• He is lucky that he has such inferior opposition. Of the party, Shadowland .has win. ning: form to. his credit, but it is hot good' enough to take him m front -jf Richore, unless of course the atter goes very badly. r As most people have "already asclaimed, the: Derby bn Thursday certainly looks' like seeing Richorc m the forefront. , Bridget Galindo is again m among the easy, class next week.
