Hard Hit deserted his natural event, the steeples, for the Cup, and- collected it easily. tKilkee found the weight over "much, and as expected Thaddeus did well, heating Kilkee for second place- hy a few lengths. A- regular deluge marred the hig steeple event. .Barrister, Wicklow and Zarksome fell, Glenisla just strolled m. Three sound things already well noticed m this paper — Sartolite, Linton and Mettle Drift, accounted for the home event m the order named. Jim Thistleton has had steady luck this season. Beautiful weather signalised the opening of the Tuapeka County Jockey Club's meeting. Rain fell later on, but not so heavily and consistently as at Riverton. Old Borodino made a bad start m the home event, but managed to account for it easily.. Tlie same veteran of the Armour's hung .a bit m the Flying, but duplicated his home event win. Mirza did not leave the mark neatly m the Stewards, but this item of Christie's led the chase m the straight and walked m. A good event at Riverton and one that should always draw is the Waiau Steeples, of two .miles; but it was marred by a very thih card. In this event Golden Link when well m front came to grief at the second last fence, and the unlooked-for Miss Western just strolled m, Bonally ahd the muchmouthed Miss Trixie being nowhere. Work at the Forbury is brisk and consistent, Dunedin being well; represented by many promising things."'. Traill was offered a good figure for his filly, but there was nothing doing. Lady Wayward 11. (imp.), her dam, has a useful record as a matron. Rorke's Drift looked as well as ever he did at Riverton. The old chap was the real outsider m the chief event the second day, which he won comfortably/ paying a nice price. The weather was that rotten at Riverton that everyone got soaked. One old gent, from the West Coast who was conducting a waterfall, via his whiskers, remarked that "the bottom has fallen out of. the sky" — only he used a more stable expression than the term bottom. One of the riders m the opening* steeple event at Riverton had time to have a spot half-way round, remount again, and touch a bit of money at the end. Black and Tan raced like the Black-and-Tans. He could hot finish. Riverton course is a splendid one: all that's wanted is a decent grandstand and some .natural shelter. Glenislw is- by Pallas Lea (Pallas — Hard-a-Lee) — Hornet. It was a treat to see the little fellow jump. His galloping and jumping enticed many to forget the deluge that was pouring down at the time.
