SCOTLAND'S SUCCESS.
Probably when Jim Brennan era-; barks for . England m April next, onesection oi the community will hail his departure with delight, as ever since the genial James has set about the stupendous task of beating the bagmen, his efforts have been characterised by unqualified success, and , his machinations among the ringirien have cost many a penciller sleepless nights.. Aided and abetted by clever, trainer Dick O'Connor, Jim has 'brought ,off some great coups of late years, but. none greater than the /latest with Scotland m last Saturday's Newmarket. Scotland has always been a great galloper, and .after a successful 2-year-old career, young |Jim Wilson, who had charge of him, put the son of Wallace aside for a while, and planned a great career for him. But the fates decreed otherwise, as , although Scotland showed great form m private, he never showed anything m the way of startling gallops m public. After many failures,, Wilson reluctantly let him go to Mr S. P. Mackay for 850 guineas, and Scotland weni; west. However, the. change did not benefit him, and the son of Wallace returned to Victoria, and,- acting under O'Connor's advice, Brennan purchased him' for 60d guineas. The consistent manner m which "Scot^ land was boomed by the ■! bookmakers before the weights appeared made him a hot favorite, ami he held his position right up to .the end. No doubt his victory was a sore blow to the ring, and, m consequence, there has been much weeping and wailing behind the sacred portals " oi ' Tatt's Club"; but the Tommies have only themselves to blame, as • Scotland would probably have been a much better horse for them "but for their systematic sbooming. —Sydney "Sportsman." .. .
