THE OTAKI CLUB'S NEW RACECOURSE.
Last Saturday the writer visited the hew co-urge that is being prepared ,for trite above club, • tThe stewards of the club very kindly placed a trap at my disposal, and' several o! them accompanied me. Tlie.dav was a perfect'one, and a" couple .of hours was spent looking over the property. ■'•. ' "It .is situated on the eastern side of -tlie railway and- is ionly about lour minutes' walk by road from the station. Mr.G. Coptcs has the contract for laying .off and levelling the course, and he has &lai?ge gang, of men employed . So satisfactory has been the progress made that he expects to be 'clear m a fortnight's time. The track will be a mile : round and : will , have two ..good ' long straights. The 'soil, is of a sandy nature, which . should guarantee the course being always dry ami the going good, no matter how Md the weather "is. ■•Altogether the property consists of about . eighty acres, on part of which grows soine splendid virgin bush, which will make the racecourse a very popular, ohe'for- picnic parties from stations both north and south. Mr ITcma T e Aro, the secretary of the Club, w-ho led the party, pointed out -iho various points of interest, as did 'Messrs P. 11. Taipua and Maihaka, stewards of the .Olub. The outing was a v^ery enjoyable one and the opinion was freely expressed that the course m time should,' be a very well appointed one m every, respect.
