THE STATE AND THE KID.
The Responsibilities of Parents. A portly sixtecn-stone woman who answered to tho name of Mrs Cavanagh appeared at Christchurch Magistrate's Court to show cause why she shouldn't contribute towards the support of her five children, who are being brought up at St. Vincent's. Industrial school, South Dunedin. This woman's lot was originally a rather hard one. Her husband died leaving her with no fewer than ten children to provide for. As she was m indigent circumstances this was quite beyond her powers, so the State stepped m and/ relieved her of her burden. The whole ten were COMMITTED TO DIFFERENT PLACES. Tho Education Department lately asked the v police to ascertain if the woman's position had m any way improved. Mr Cassidv said that Mrs Cavanagh was about to take a billet as cook at 25s per week. Magistrate Bishop said he understood from the woman that she had already sot the situation. However, as she was to get 25s a week she could afford to contribute. It was monstrous that she should do so, especially as -she spent her money m) other directions. He was aware of that fact. In future she would have to part up a shilling a week for ear-b child. The la ; dy didn't seem to like the decision at all.
