SIMS THE SINNER. A Menace to Society. Sentence of 7 Years' Imprisonment. Although he ,is only twenty years Of age, a depraved fellow named Albert Sims has now been twice con- ■ victed of offences against females. In 1904 this young sex maniac was con- j vieted at Wellington for carnally knowing a girl who was hot qiuite ten years of age, and he was subsequently sent to Burn-ham -Industrial School. Last month he indecently assaulted a domestic servant on the public road near Ashburton. She was cycling at the time and she met Sims, who /was also wheeling. He accosted her, and asked the way to Rakaia, and she directed him and he then clutched at her and assaulted her. The victim screamed, and her cries were heard by F. Lunt, ,a laborer, and Rhoderick Bremner, >a sheep buyer, who went to her assistance. When Sims saw them approach, he mounted his machine and made off, but Lunt followed, him on his cycle, and eventually overtook him. Later, on he was arrested At the Supieme Court, Timaru, this weeK, the.accubed ADMITTED THE CRIME, but said he knew nothing about it as he was drunk at the time. Mr Justice Denniston said that he could not accept that plea, and the case would have to be proved accordingly. The Court was cleared, evideuce taken, and a verdict of guilty was returned. Accused reiterated his statement j about being drunk m face of the fact that witnesses swore he was sober. He had got drunk on the racecourse, he said, and did not remember anything except Balling off his bike and waking up m Ins w-bare with Ms clothes on next mornin"- his machine being standing alongside a corse hedge.
