Feilding next Friday and Saturday.

Neither Elevation or Gold Crest are engaged m the A.R.C. Derby.

Mr A. Lainif has had Glengowrie blistered and turned out for a lengthy spell.

It is rumored that B. Deeley will m future ride Toa Tuhi m his engagements.

W. Davies will probably take Seaman, Ballarat, Yosami and Pardon to Feilding.

"A bastard production" is the way Mr A. L. D. Praser refers -.to -the now famous Gaming Act.

Lass o' Gowrie has been sent on a visit to Gold Reef, and the attempt to train her has been abandoned.

The Hon. Geo.. McLean, president of the Dunedin Jockey Club-, leaves next week on a trip to England.

Last week at Christohurch" Len King had' the misfortune to break his arm b^ being thrown out of a cab. .

The Wanganui-owned Wairarapa was not taken to the Marlborough meeting, as he went wrong early m the week.

Since his return from Riccarton Harry Jackson has been spelling Armistice, Helen Portland and Guiding Step at Wanganui.

Peter Johnson, who trains Rangihatea, Narrow Escape and Grand Circle at Fpxton, was formerly connected with" A. Lord's stable at Woodville. ...'■■

; The-;.; Foxton trainer, Alf Wright, has sot Joe Chamberlain 1 looking m good condition, and the horse seems much improved by his lengthy spell. He is nominated at Woodville, and should run well there.

.The Hutt owner-trainer W. Davies has .accepted a tender for building his new house and stables at Trentham, and the work is well under way. It is. expected to be ready for occupation about the middle of 'next month.

At Woodville there is a pretty fast three-year-old filly by Euroclydon, from Munwai, dam of St. Joe and Apa. She is owned and. trained by Mr Andrew Laing, assisted by Charley Price, who will ride Mr Laing's horses during the current season.

Reports from Feilding state that Alec Hall has lost the services of Kremlin and Wirral, both these horses having broken down. If this is correct it is bad luck for the. Feilding mentor, who has not' enjoyed a good turn of Fortune's wheel for many months past. ;

Joe Gallagher continues to win races with the horses recently under C. Ttf. Coleman's care. His latest success was with Omati m the Hurdles at Ellerslie, when an odds-on favorite m Ranana was downed. Gallagher is a very painstaking, careful trainer, and what he . does not know about horses is not worth knowing. .-:.■'

Probably the record 'maiden'- came to. light at the Hawera Flat races on Saturday. This frisky gelding was 17 years old, and was just broken m. He was very fractious and green and alter some trouble was got to the post. He was bred at the Hunter Valley, where there are quite a number of horses that reach a good old age before being handled.

A funny story is attached to the sale of Reveille to Mr Webb, of Masterton. It appears that the purchaser thought he was buying Tarigimoana, ami was prepared to bid up to 200 guineas for _tbis mare, and was completely, taken by surprise when the horse m the ring was knocked down to him for 35 - guineas. It took him some time to see his mistake.

During the week V-irico was shipped to- Blenheim 'to take part m the Marlboiough meeting. Prior to this I had a good looli over the Conqueror colt m his' box at the Hutt, and was rather surprised to find that he stands 16-.3. He is a stoutly-built gelding, but is not being hurried at all and will not be ready for punters to take a risk with for some time. I would say that he will be a fair horse m the autumn. .

There were only two youngster* backed here for the Juvenile Handicap, and they ran first and second.

The dual victory 6f Grey ; Dawn at Ellerslie last Saturday was anticipated here, and his backers were m hot and heavy. .. ...

Splendid nominations have been received for the Woodville meeting, and some high-class animals hay« been engaged. " '

The A.R.C, handicapper scored a triumph last Saturday when the judge declared two dead heats during the afternoon.

Old Swagsman paid a remarkably fine price -m the Maiden Hurdles which would suggest that his party did not fancy his chance

The Martinborougli /trainee Tommy Ross, bad the bad luck t 0 ha?e his stables burnt down while he was away at the Carterton meeting. Penates is to be given a run at * eliding and. should annex a sDrint event there. Mr Barclay's colt also figures m the nominations for • Woodville.

Whilst schooling Pardon at the Hutt last Saturday T. Guildford had the misfortune to get a toss m the air, and on reaching terra firma he fractured his collarbone.

The bidding for Solution started, at 300 guineas, and went up to 800 guineas m hundred. guinea bids. Then it went m 50 guinea jumps until reaching the 1050 . guineas, at- which she changed JJiands**-* Melbourne ; c Truth." ■. - ':■ .-,* ?■••■

The imported stallion San Fraricjsco, now at t 'ohn -McDonald's- MunHie Bungie Stud, Moree, N.S.W.. has got a good advertisement through the success of his son Elevation m the Canterbury Jockey Club Derby and Canterbury Cup. s <■••;

■ s sol, olu t t ion changed hands, at auction m Melbourne on Friday -last The bidding mounted up, until- Sol Green said 1000 guineas, but the Messrs Moses, of Combadello stud, H.S.W, put 50 to that figure, -And secured ' the splendidly-performed "mare- They v no doubt, intend Solution, for, stud ' purposes, as it is now" well vagh impossible to train her. •

Why- have horsey mek such sx. fondness for the word "like ?". Converse with any of them, and be they jockey, owner, or punter, it is- "like" all the time. .Last Saturday an owner said to me that, "It was like {this like. I was going to spell her like, and I did not think another race would hurt her like, so I put a few; pounds on her like and she flew m like."' That's like how he explained- it like.

, The Hack Hurdles at Feilding mil most likely be productive of some, spirited speculation. P. Johnston will favor Te Uira, St.. . Amelia will carry a lot of Manawatu money, Harry Hickey will be punting on one' of his pair' and Paddy McLaughlin mil be entrusting his hew purchase (Earmark) with a load. Only one will -win:- Which will it be 7

Armamento lias been sold for a paltry 100 guineas, to Mr H. Kerr.;' of Timaru,'' ; who, : . it is hoped, 'will bave better luck with him than that which befell Bill -Davies. I' reckon ;d, the lowest possible;, cpmp.utatlon this han-dicap-hampered horse myist have cost his owner" i'Sfttf^guiheas. Bninjj unsuccessful at Riccarton must have meant 600. guineas difference, as the stake was a good one, hip owner w<i:> getting £300 off- the -tnnelih'.e. and he- would have been sold for 200 guineas quite veasityr r: ■■;■■

The first half mile of the Melbourne Cup was run faster Chan 'it has ever been" done before, for it only occupied 51sec. •■"the' next two., separate half miles, however; took-con-sider ably, longer," being 53 ? sec. and 52isec... respectively, but the concluding one was done m 503 sec-.. -Good judges consider that they never before saw two horses- finish so fast at the end of a long race as did Apologue and Mooltan, and this opinion is corroborated by tbe-time recorder!.— Melbourne "Truth." •

An action for slander, with damages laid at. £600, has been laid -by the jockey, Harold Cofrey, against the well-known owner-trainer, Mr E. B. Bell. The matter arose out ri the bumping match that occurred L; the St. Alban's Handicap atMoonee Valley, when Mr Bell's son ami his c01t,,. Boldrewood, were nearly knocked over the rail by B^anquo, who was ridden by Coffey, and the remarks complained about; .. are. alleged to have been made to and m the hearing of the: .Sydney trainers T. Payten, S. Burtorimnd I. Earnsfcaw.

The following, "foalings are announced' from the • Waikanae .stud :—Pahtan (brown colt) , Spun Gold ,tf>rown colt), Biilbul (bay colt). Prelude (•brown colt), Strathspey (brown c01t),." La Gloria- (bay " edit).'; Moreze (brown colt) ', all to Kilcheran ■■ Bona (bay colt)* SJdnriette (bay colt), both to Advance ; Success (bay filly) , Eketerini Passeropoulo (brown colt), Ringlet (bay filly)--, all to St. Ambrose. ; Lady Maude (bay filly), to KilclJeran or Conqueror ;' Lady Principal (bay' colt), Asteria (bay filly, dead), both to Conqueror ; Bluefire, Bloomer and Waiwhera ''missed."

Wtith the pwner, Mr L. Wood, I took a run out to the .-Hutt last we.ek to have a look at Ukraine, and an agyeeable surprise . awaited me .. there. \i. is difficult to 'imagine the' great improvement' this filly has made during -the last, couple of months, and at tlie'" pfesent" 1 t'fme. she looks' a typical thoroughbred and 'one of whom" her owner .a,nd trainer may be justly proud. She has furnished every* where and looks a galloper out and out. She much resembles her full brother, All Red, but will,. I think, be much bigger. At present no. definite programme is. mapped out for Ukraine, but I fancy, we will see her under silk at Awa'puni. : :
