APOLOGUE, v -

By Phoebus Appollo— Miss Gladys. Hats off to Apologue, the Melbourne Cup winner, and* may he go on and win a Viceroy's Cup. As he is a gelding he must be considered well sold, for when horses have won the Melbourne Cup they do not- get a chance afterwards, . and m this respect it is very easy to name a-doz-en such winners who have been rank failures afterwards. Apologue was bought at the Sylvia Park sale of yearlings by Messrs Cleland and Thorpe. As a two and three year old he was ! not even moderate, and then to dissolve the partnership he was- put up to auction, and purchased • by Mr Cleland for 1010 guineas, and shipped to Australia. For many months prior to .the A.J.C. Spring meeting ;■ recently concluded, Apologue was shrouded m a fair amount of mystery: . When the Newcastle Oup, with its sweep contingencies, was about to be contested m April last, 'the drawers of Apologue put up the customary slice and the Ptooebius— Apollo horse was taken to the Coaly City, and started for the big event. He was nothing like right, and although he was prominent at an important stage of the race; he failed to be one of the placed three,, From that time until the A.J.C. fixture Apologue did little or nothing m the way of racing. Looking hearty and big he was an unplaced starter m the Prince of Wales Stakes on June 3rd. Thence hitherwafid until the Randwick carnival, Apologue had been getting steadily and properly well. In the Metropolitan, Mooltan, carrying 6.13, beat Apologue, who was carrying 8.7, by just a brief head, and after one of the 'greatest finishes ever witnessed at Rahdwick. The locked pair may be said to have distanced the r rest of the field. Mooltan was trained to the hour ' for the Eipsom and Metrop. Apologue's ■ racing on as he did made it extremely doubtful as to his having been cherry ripe on.Metrop. day. Two days previously. Apologue made Poseidon get a most skedaddlesome move on to win the Spring Stakes, one mile and a-half. Apologue was conceding Poseidon 51b at weight for age. After going over to Victoria, Poseidon won the Eclipse Stakes, and , Apologue, carrying 0.5, accounted for the Coongv Handicap. For this he was 1 penalised sft m the Melbourne cup, which made his impost exactly Bst, but this did not stop Bookmaker Cleland's horse from winning although, the race was nearly lost owing to the weakness of his jockey, who fainted before he could weigh m. • Many Maorilanders threw m for good wins over ArwVloisnie's success, and the Ring would get one of the hardest knocks it has had for many years. .
