MR. ARNOLD, J.P.
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,— ln you papeif of last Saturday you say I get £6 per month for visiting the gaols and asylums. You most certainly have been wrongly informed, perhaps by some poor fellow who has spent somet ime m one o£ the above institutions. He may believe I ought to have such. I have never received one penny from the Government or anyone else. I have been offered presents from friends and relations of those who have been m our Gaols and Asylums, but have never accepted them, and never intend to, because presents ofttimess bring men who have a duty to perform under an obligation, and it is best, to be free. But after all it is very nice to have the appreciation and gratitude of men who were once down as low as they could be, and to-day are doing well for themselves and the Dominion. To me it is better than gold. It may not be quite so useful. No, it is not I who get. the pay. I get the misrepresentations, and as a rule I never write to the papers about such ; but when you say I get £G a month, I thought I could not let such a statement go forth to the world without denying it. For ten years I have been connected with these institutions, and again state I have never received one penny. I feel sure you will do me the justice of publishing this.— Yours, etc. • ' • E, ARNOLD,
