THE RIVAL SIN-SHIFTERS.

A' correspondent from Pareora East writes :-rThere is competition m the sin-shifting line at Pareora East, where the noted cow-shooters come from and where the boarding-house proprietor knocks the copper chimney over because the boarders do not refill with water for his cheese and kisses and because they managed to boil water without the use of a chimney, he ' plunged a crowbiir through the copper for ventilation's sake, I suppose, and the other hash foundry boss goes fishing and gets landed instead. It is a lively hole and a dry one, for no one yet has had the pluck to open a sly-grog shop. Chow chap Lee, the little man with loud voice and large family, is going to hold forth fortnightly m the local hall. Pareora is only 4-year-old, and the Chow champion started holding services m the hash foundry dining-room to the accompaniment of stale fried steak, etc. Anyway, that fell through. Probably the collections were too small or the burgoo preaching did not suit the high-class natives of Pareora. The Freezing Works Co. gave them a section, but they never got any further than accepting it. The Wesieyans stepped m, bought land, and built and opened a chapel, free of debt, at which Chap Lee was highly incensed and gave the boss ganger ol the Wesieyans nothing. Anyhow, Chong Chap Lee will hold forth i every other week now, and the married women who love these little sinshifters as a 'brother will make tea for him, and if the old man is out and the baby asleep, take him on their matronly knees and nurse him ; he is small enough, goodness knows. His preaching will instil into the barren minds of Pareoraites that the Chow is a man like myself, dear hearers, and only, iwants encouragement, etc. , etc.
