A Peneke Night.

[(By, "Pakeha,".}

If was a happy thought that induced the Poneke Football Club members to forego its annual "smoko" m favor of a social gathering, at which their sisters, their cousins and their aunts could assemble and while away a few hours swiftly and pleasantly with mirth, music and story. The affair came off at the New Century Hall yesterday week, and the management, particularly those zealous club officers Dan Twohill and Charley Mitchell, deserve more than a meed of praise for having worked it to such , a successful issue. The "trippists" were delighted with the floor and music, and to them it was *'no sleen till morn, when youth and pleasure meet to chase the glowing hours with flying feet," It would have needed something more noiseful than Napoleon's artillery at Qua-rtre Bras to check the revelry m progress at Kent-terrace that night, Our toeballers waded through the mazy waltz with much the same skill they showed m piloting the leather across the Park last season; m fact, for deadly earnestness some of their rushes were up to All Black standard. To see Billy Wallace, Freddie Roberts, "Mitchie,"' Jim Sweenev. and other lady-killers fiittinp- about from end to end of the room with the sweetest pieces of "muslin" tucked under their arms was to view Venice, Rome, and Cleopatra's needle all m one. The übiquitous James carolled as divinely as Jean de Reske. Anyway, everybody declared that it went down just as well. Wally Smith "monologued" sufficiently well enough to keen everybody m convulsive laughter during his "turn" on the entertainment board. Before the fun f commenced m real earnest, Dr. Newman addressed a few remarks to the convivial souls, and said how nice, thoughtful and unselfish it was of the Poneke Club members to have a social at which "Miss Petticoat" could .cooperate m the evening's festivities. Then the little doctor handed over his own trophy to Billy Wallace as the best all-round player m the club last season, also two handsome p-old watches presented by Host Smith of the Cricketers Arms Hotel, for the most improved back and forward m the senior combination m the season just exnired. The lucky winners were "Dago" Rush and Mifcchison. The recipients were hear til v hurrahed, and so was the little doctor on 'quitting the room. Altogether it was a spanking time ,that the boys and girls bad at the Poneke dance, and the refrain softly whistled by them "Are you going to the dance next season" is m great evidence just now. And Dan Twohill, Charlie Mitchell, Norm Wilkinson, Jim Sweeney, "Griff o" and Mentiplay are just as proud over that fact as Joey Ward is of his brand new privy councillorship title.
