" YELLOW PERIL."

TO THE EDITOR

Sir,— From time to time I have read and rejoiced over your courageous denunciations of the "Yellow peril" m "Truth's" columns, arid I am only one of many hundreds that appreciate your untiring efforts m our country's cause. I've just been reading "Truth's" last issue, and the paragraph concerning our Hokitika neighbors has prompted me to crave your readers' indulgence, if you will be kind enough to accept this for publication. There is one part of "Observer's" views untleniablv logical. It runs : "In common justice (to the Chows) I think that if the Government has imposed a tax of £100 to be paid by him, and he .becomes a law-abiding subject of the Empire, it would not be fair play to persecute him." I don't think it Avould either. We have no right individually to be unduly hostile to- the Chow. He is living here under British protection the same as ourselves. Anything contrary to decent protection from us would be a sequel to the Vancouver anti-Jap-anese riot, which was recorded m our cables about a fortnight ago. If New Zealand, or any other country, gives admission to aliens, they should also aftord them a share of benefits, and also some reliable protection, otherwise we cannot expect them to grin and bear the insults we heap upon them. The nation to which these ill-used foreigners belong might come forward n.nd ask our reasons for breaking faith with them, and there might be some "skin and hair" flying as a natural consequence: The yellow mongrels are here, and will take some shifting and one of the few ways of fretting rid of them is to unite the indignation that exists from one emt of the colony to the other, and get to business m. some practical Manner. We should approach the Government m a united manner, and demand the-atten-tion that the dirty. disgusting nredicament deserves, and boycott, him m the meantime for all we're worth, regardless of the paltry saving that nifp:ht be derived by Patronising tihe^e undesirables. Trusting tljat our efforts will earn' more weightin the future, and bo instrumental m accomplishing the extermination of the "Yellow agony.— l am etc.,. A. W. Greymouth. Sept. 10, 1907.
