FAIRBROTHER'S FAREWELL.
The funeral of the late Henry Fairbrother, who died last week m the local hospital, as the result of an accident at the recent Wellington meeting, took place last Sunday at Hastings. The cortege, which was nearly a mile long, included visitors from all parts of the district, and there were over a hundred vehicles following. Fairbrother had . been m the saddle for a considerable number of years, and on account of his quiet demeanor and unassuming manner he -was very popular with all who knew him.' Though he had not met With as much success as some of our other hurdle riders* he was an accomplished jockey. "And often men .would say That horse his mettle from his rider takes. 1 ' Some eight years ago he was apprenticed to J. Cameron, who now trains for Mr F. Douglas, and then had Mongonui and several other horses. Later on he was first horseman for Mr F. Moeller when that gentleman owned The Shrew, etc.. His principal win. was on 'Mr Armstrong's Evening m the Wanganui Steepjechase, and of late years he has been riding "for all the principal owners m the Hawke's Bay district. He had met with several serious accidents m the jumping business, and it is indeed strange that after surviving all these, he should meet with death by an accident on the flat. Jockeys like •Fairbrother arc not met with too often, and s his , death is indeed- a loss to the fraternity.
