The Jessie Maclachlan Concert Company will appear m the Town Hall on Thursday, Frida- and Saturday next. Ferris, Hamilton, and Sinclair, Wellington burglars looked mildly surprised when Justice Cooper sent them up for fifteen years. * It had been discovered that the revolver found m the possession of Ferris was purchased subsequent to the burglaries, which detracted from the ser-. iousness of the offences, and it was not anticipated by the general public that the sentence would exceed ten years, although it is generally* conceded that the Crimes and the record of the prisoners justified the extra five years. Prior to the delivery of sentence, Sinclair took occasion to say that he didn't wish to cast .reflections on Miss Burgess when he mentioned that she was living with Hughes, the fruiterer. Messrs T. G. McCarthy, Gerald Fitzgerald, and Laery and Co., whose premises were i"the happy hunting ground of burglars Ferris, Hamilton* and Sinclair, have written m flatterins: terms of appreciation of the pluck and astuteness of Detectives Mo Orath and Cassells, who were respon-> sible for the apprehension of Ine-des* peratu men and the recovery of valuable property. Lt is gratifying to learn that the correspondence m each case was accompanied by something tangible and negotiable for the ordinary com modi ties of everyday l)te, a circumstance of some importance to the poorly paid detective force- The, fact that Chief Detective McGratft waived all claim to the coin m fa^otf ot his subordinate was a graceful act, and confirms what most people previously suspected, namely, thatf the chief is a white man.
