It is- interesting to note that the anti-Asiatic League formed at Mas-
terton is progressing very favourably, and that its influence will be brought to bear and felt, it is trusted, at the proper time, viz., when Parliament assembles. It* is stilll further interesting to learn the kind of opposition that this league has to contend against. There is fore- 1 most a daily press that took the yellow devils into its maternaHike fold • but it looks as if it h^;d nursed a viper because' the opposition is being carefully toned down,. Practically the. Wairarapa press is sitting on a rail, and carefully watching to see which way the' cat will jump ere it says or , does anything definite fora \tfhite New Zealand. It is not so much., however' the opposition of a weak-kneed wobbling and Chinese ad-vertisement-subsidised 1 ' press that the Anti-Ch'owite need fear.. The ' Chow's friend is found m a lot of white men's homes ; it is perhaps his mother, his wife, drhis sister; it certainly cannot be his daughter, unless she is too lazy to w,ash her own clothes, and prefers to give Her dirty linen;,; sometimes foul and filthy, to the, equally dirty, foul,, and filthy ."alien), because she will 1 not take the trouble to seek some hardworking widow woma© who ' unfortunately has jfco ; .sc^ and rub. m tbe tub to keep body and soul together, and to fill ■many . hungry--:-;lr(?tte-mouths. The Chow chammon is .the! white woman, / generally the matron; who. gives '''John" '» cup of tea, and entertains him when her husband is away ; who buys her fruit and vegetables him, and calls him a much-maligned creature who has as muchi right to live as . anyone else. It is this kind of wbite wpman," who more by good fortune than a strict regard for chastity has dodged the pitfalls which beset maidenhoods' torturous course, who barrack loudly a-nd long and indecently for the dirty j despised race, places the leprous Mongol on v the same level as her own flesl* and "hlood. It is tills sort of woman Who deserves to become the grandjnbther to a Chinese hybrid. This is •the '; sort of opposition that antiAsiatic Leagues have to fight. The fietit must begin at home. Once settled the rest is easy. The few Chow champions that rusji into print ate cowardly, skunks who skunk behind the hedge of andnynmity, They certainly show a decent regard for Anglo-Saxon names by declining to affix them to turgid, , and often lying and bolstered up, defences for a race whose doings admit ol no defence. These ourtitle fish correspondents who squirt their inky fluid on sanitary paper are traitors to their white fellow creatures, and their, shame is never so manifest as when; we find ' such norn de plumes as "Britisher," ••'Liberty," "Fakplay," etc., etc., at the bottom of some senseless scribble vainly seeking to point out ' some hidden virtue m the Chinese who arc menacing New Zealand. It is very pleasing to mote that various sections of the New Zealand press are raising their voices to stir the people up to a sense of the danger which an Asiatic horde m their, midst constitute. The various ;country papers are awakening to the danger and the consequence is that white men and women are being roused, and are airing their opinions m no uncertain manner. It is useless to say that the Chinaman is useful . " What ' he does can be done more profitably hy white men and women. He obeys the law only because he lives m fear -of it. He hordes up his gold and ships, 4t away to China, and New Zealand suffers by the loss of that wealth. Down at Kumara, the ''Times" has opened its columns to correspondents on the "Yellow Peril," and" ; the result is very interesting!. ; AntiChows can only repeat themselves^ It is the same old story of sordid squalor, vice, and misery, that .follow "m the Chinese wake. That is undeniable. Yet there are apologists even for this vice and squalor. Here is a sample of. what the country press is deluged, with of late. The following letter is . addressed to the editor of the Kumara "Times" at recent date :
THE YELLOW PERIL
(To the Editor.)'
Sir,— A correspondent m your paper last night was very severe m his remarks about the Chinese, and secminply he would exterminate the w^ple race as a plague on earth/ What an uncharitable and Urt-British attack! Perhaps he is not a Britisher. His letter showed a shallow and stunted intel-
lect, and from his argument one would infer that the European, was ' the only race that had a right to exist, but let me tell hini that the Chinese were a civilised race before Europe as present existed. China kas been occupied by the' Chinese since the beginning of time, while Europe has been undergoing changed Some of the vices that are levelled at the Chinese resident m this colony caa be traced to thb wickedness of Europeans. For instance the opium curse will ' always rebound m England. Then I again the Chinese, are accused of succeeding as tradesmen, and he is a criminal because he doesn't subsist on the same bill of fare as the European. Now, Mr. Editor, the Chinese only engage m pursuits that Europeans despise and will not follow. Some of their houses are filthy, it must be • admitted, but so are some Europeans.' He does not pax direct taxes but that is aot his fault, as he is hot asked to pay them ; hero the law is to blame. All the European gets for paying- rates is a worthless vote on election day. Is that the Chink's fault ? " White New Zealand" also accuses the Chinese olf decoying and. ruining, young girls. Here again the; mark of Cain is on the •European, who defiles the girl first, and is responsible for her later career. It is. this ''white" viper who drives her to the Chinese den. The cause is the white brute, the effect the Chimese den. There are good apd bad m every nation, and I • venture •v tef say there is no bigger percentage of bad m the yellow nrace than m the white.— l am, etc. , FAIR PLAY. "Fair Play" is a fiend. He is a skulking, skunk lurking behind a lofty norn de plume* He is generally that kind of humbug who; croaks about British fair play, and .regards anything unmanly as un-British, as, if some Britishers are not the greatest' bullies and rogues and cbVards extant. The Chinese of course must be extremely grateful to such a hookful blockhead as this' '"Fair Play" appears to be, judging from his epithets of "shallowness ." and "stunted intellect." "Fair Play" is' ju»t that sort of insolent upstart and ignoramus who knows . just; enough to misquote, and baijl£ blunders into a net of miserably p mistakes. More than; that, he is an atrocious liar. His. letter speaks for itself. And if the Chinese have always occupied China why do they wander away to far-away New Zealand, and pollute everything that;. is pure and, good. It is because "the Chinamen have been admitted to a higher civilisation that'th^y cannot live on the same level , as the white. The while, ,by the .presence of the alien, has been degraded to ,the Chow's level, and, what is mbre.'tbe. administration of justice m. this country shows too . plainly that there is one law. for the white man and another for the Chinanian. If "Fair Play" is a man, a white man, let him disclose his identity, and then we shall, observe what we shall observe. .
