A new Mqrman Church was opened at Mangakahia recently. The opening, sery'ice was attended .by ' 577 Europeans and 443 Maoris. The service was conducted m Maori, and was, interpreted for the benefit of the Europeans present. The edifice is 50 feet long by 24ft high, and has a steeple 50ft high. Eighteen elders were present, and there was a large gathering of Europeans and Maoris. George Abraham Cheetham, a youth, was charged at the Penrith Court (New South Wales) with attempting suicide.. This was the result of " Penny dreadful »■' literature. The accused was so impressed with a certain passage where a man held a revolver to his heart without flinching that he purchased a revolver for 5s 6d, and did likewise to experience the sensation. .He alleged it than accidentally went off. Cheetham was discharged. Down south, the other day, after the third act of the " Squaw Man," a boy -divested him of his clothing and cried to go to bed A play that will do that, would do mostly anything.
