FOUL, FILTHY FIJIANS.
Murky Man and the Modest .■l"./-] . '■■ Maid. .■ . \ . ■ . Last . Friday night, as "/ever was, while Adolphus .and Angelina we're ijusily engaged doihg m their Zibishun .Wonderland" tickets on the waterchujfce and the toboggan, and, Ltwirl&g gracefully, or disgracefully; '4o#ii'- the 'helter=-skelterV p a little scene was taking place on the qther'sid'e of the lake which. -.wasn't billed among the day's attractions,, by /Magnificent Munro. ' During the past week or two the frisky .Fijiaris have been improving the shining hourpoling pleasure-seekers round the lake m one of their native boats, constructed by themselves and guaranteed : the genuine article. In whatever other direction the^e .islanders may be deficient as regards civilised ideas, certain* it is that as seekers after the .almighty dollar they're right there every time. When they first commenced m the boating biz. these Fijians hadn't quite got the grip of the. thing, for there used to be only three at the game; all three , went away jon the raft, or whatever they calrt't, two working the pole propellers, the odd man collecting the dibs, and all three howling their native songs, to Methodist tunes, at .the same time. Latterly they've tried a new dodge which certainly succeeds m its object of attracting more passengers and incidentally more gonce. Down at the embankment stage stand some halfdozen niggers, who keep up, a continuous howl of what might, by the musically ignorant, be termed singing, and people naturally (the women very naturally) crowd round to hear them, and the nunt is crowded every time it starts out to CAREER ROUND THE LAKE. Last Friday night was very dark, the usual crowd had congregated round the Fijian warblers, and among the congregation stood a young girl attended by an elderly gentleman, .apparently her father. The cuYly-headed choir was lifting, up its united voice m that now wellknown melody, "Oh, we neve.r shall forget you," "when suddenly the girl gave a piercing scream and immediately pushed herself back behind her male attendant. The crowd wonderied what had happemed, but it was too dark to see distinctly, and the girl, considerably agitated, hastened away with her escort, who was no
less disturbed m mind, when he had ascertained what had actually, occurred. Just what had happened was that one of the Fijians, a brilliant example of what y , s ■ THE "CHRISTIANISING" MIS^SJONARIES can do with such black brutes, had seized a moment when the maiden was pressed close against him by the crowd, to commit an, putrage'ously indecent act upon her. "Naturally, enough her elderly escort, boiling over with fury that such an 'indecent assault should have been made on his charge, hotly expressed his intention of making a complaint to Munro, but the girl, m tears by this time, begging him to do nothing further m the matter, and he himself dreading the painful publicity that would be hers should he carry but- his first intention, eventually decided to let the matter rest where it was. What a pity he was not able and young enough to use his dukes on the swine. After "Truth's" caustic comments on the doings of a certain lady with one of these colored "Christian" Fijians, the authorities . announced that the Fijian encampment would be closed to the public after 7 o'clock each evening.. Apparently they were moved, by the disclosures made, to consider that, m the interests of morality, . the murky men from the banana islands weren^t safe to leave unterided m the proximity of women and girls after 4ark. Yet now .lihesedusky' demons-after-skirt arevto • *be seen about the-Zibisliuti 'at i^Hioiir^; 'and some lovely yarns ;ai'e' T g7?Wg t ; he rounds anent their carrying on with white women. It-is freely said among those who should 'know that one "lady" who , ; ... ;>...; BECAME "ENAMOURED" v of one of the black beauties . has as a result . liad* to;,: ': become the inmate of a medical institution -.to. undergo repairs. She won't care to take ■' any further -/..risks. .,.. But there are others. It is an "everlasting, stain on our white womanhood that; m their lustful desires,.- these, crea* i tures should so far forget their, color as to become , the wjllinK ,■ sport .'.. -of black savages, but the fact .remains, nevertheless. It's as' well for everyone that the Fijians are homeward ,bound within the next few. days, and meanwhile it would .be well if Mag T nificentMunro instructed his minions to keep the fier^r Fijians under lpck and key after dark.- When • /tliese black beasts become so, emboldened as to grossly i.outf age .young girls, as was done on Friday; night, it becomes \ the duty -of those m charge to -'take' such pfe- . .cautions as will make any' repetition of- such sordid doings m- future Sn absolute impossibility. what tales these. blapk/'fuzzies" will tell of New Zealand womanhood, when they return to.' their missionary cursed islands m the . ; warm northeast. . -\- ■;.
