Last Saturday there was a run on Maharanui - for the Manawatu Cup.

A leading Northern punter was, last week, making a lot of inquiries as to who was. going to ride Paritutu m the Auckland Cup. He was apparently satisfied on that point for he accepted 200 to 24 about that horse's chance.

Bad luck pursues* Mr R. ,T. Turnbull, the popular Vice-President of the W.R.C..in his attempt to flet hold of a good horse. It's a long lane that has no turning and the writer hopes that this will be the last piece of bad luck that he will have to record for Prosser 's patron.

Mr Diugald Thompson was m town last week and I took tfte opportunity of questioning him as to the^probability of . Aoi ti going to the other side. The Feilding sport informed me that, he had not yet made up his mind . about the matter, and altogether was very reticient about it.

The ex-New Zealander. Putty, was during the week scratched for the Villiers Stakes and the Summer Cup, the two principal events at the A. J.C. meeting. The cable which announced this evidently went through a mincer before reaching here as it conveyed the news that Villiers had been scratched for the Stakes.

The following are the probable starters and their riders m the Manawatu Cup :— Signalman, 9.5 (mcl. lOIt) penalty), F. Jones ; St. Joe. 8.12, C. Jenkins „ Mystification, 8.8, G. Price ; Polyanthus, 8.5, T. O'Brien ; Bourrasque', 7.9, A. Oliver; Apa, 7.8, Wi Price ; Maharanui, 7.5, S. Reid.; Operetta, 7.2, J; Paramore ; Truce, 7.2, D. Cameron.

The Mahaki mare, Armistice, is rapidly coming into favor for the Auckland Cup and' on Wednesday next she promises to start as good a favorite as anything else m the race and will assuredly beat more than beat her. A visitor from Wanganui assures me that the mare has made a wonderful recovery, a n d though perhaps a trifle light he thinks that by the time the Cup comes round sho should be ready to run a good solid two miles.

Grenade is beine whispered as having a good chance m the Auckland Cup. _ . .

7 Pink 'Un is the best tip for the Awapuni Handicap . -on Wednesday next-

King Paul won the Jumpers' Flat, a race at the Sandown meeting on Dec. 1.

There was a field of eleven for the Flying Handicap at Plumptcin last Saturda*-

There are only eight horses m work on the Wanganui tracks at the present time.

Thunderer was not backed by his connections when he won the Midland Welter last Monday.

Splendid Idea is lame and consequently will be absent from the tracks for some time to come.

The erstwhile Auckland jockey Steve Howie is now training a nd riding jumpers m Melbourne.

LJanwem, the Pilgrim's Progress— Leda colt, will be given a run at the next Trentham meeting.

Grandstand ran two seconds at the Christ-church meeting. A similar remark applies to Don Orsino.

The coming week will keep followers of the sport busy as there are meetings' all over the colony.

They are a poor lot m the Trial Hurdles at Ashhurst. Maui, 10.13, should beat more than beat him.

LeesMe was well supported .by local p miters- when he won the High Weight Handicap at Plump ton Park.

Ohryseis (Clanrapald-Golden. Crest) .who won _ . the Exhibition Handicap had been bit the .winning., list for a .longtime.

'Signalman has incurred a 101 b penalty for the. Manawatu Cup which should successfully stop the- son. of Clanranald. •

Four -horses from W. Davies' Hutt stables are entered m : the Hack; events at the Wellington Racing Club's Cup meeting: •,

.That- useful mare, Prelude, who broke down prior to the last Thompson meeting is now located at the stud f £ti_i at ..Waikanae. v.

Jos. Prosser- has sent one of his matrons on a visit to -Porirua. • The Porirua mentor "always "had a weakness for the chestnut, sire.

Dunedin and Auckland open the ball on Wednesday, Also meetings at Mart'inborough, New Plymouth,. Xaikoura and one or two other places.

Despite Polyanthus' good showing at Woodville I incline to the opinion .that the distance will be too much for her m the Manawatu Cup.

An offer tolav 100 to 20 Paritutu for the Auckland Cup was not , accepted last week by one who is Kenerally regarded as a "head."

The handicaps for the Wairarapa meetins: appeared on Monday last. The Fordell horse, St. Joo, heads the list m tbe Cup with 9st 2lbs.

Mr G. G. Stead scratched- Seal Rock for the Grand National Derby, after he made such a poor showing m the Anniversary Handicap at Plumpton.

The "heads put m on Clementine for the Electric Handicap at Plumpton, but their calculations must have heea amiss, as the St. Clement's mare never faced the barrier.

The name of Highland Fling, who was shipped to Melbourne some months ago, appears : nominated for the next Wellington Cup. Probably ii is a misprint for Highland Reel 1 .

'.. Eden was backed for the big. • race at the Christchurch meeting, but fhe brown mare had to ""O under to Chrvseis, who was recently purchased by Mr G. J. F. Palmer, of Christehuroh.

The Palmerston Stakes, to be run next Thursday, should provide a great contest, as there is promise of a good field. The local champion, Achilles, will probably- carry his big weight to victory.

Menschikoff was started m the Sandown Cup decided recently m Melbourne. The black horse occupied the position of pacemaker for the greater part of the journey artd was one of the last to finish.

The chestnut, Illarita, was well supported locally for the Flying Handicap, at the Christchurch nieet-tn-r Mr Reid's filly beat a., fairly good field and returned her supporters a. £5 dividend.'. '„ '"'.''..'

Vardo was the.medium of a commission on the first day of the Ohristohurch meeting, but the little pony was unable to gallop fast enough so. there was no dividend for Solomon's supporters. ,

The Queensland Turf Club Derby was won by Togo, a son of the N.Z. sire Airfares. The latter., raced with 'some success m this country and was afterwards shipped to Queensland by the Hon. Hugh Mossman.

Air Motor, with a cplt foal by Grafton, and Independence are to. go 4o Sol. Green's newly-established stud farm on the Hopkins River at Warrnambool, where they will have the company t . of Gladsome and Bright Beauty.

The bay gelding, Thunderer, is performing consistently this season. The son of Hotohkiss and. Lady Augusta beat a field of eleven m the Ladies' Purse at the N.Z. Cup meeting,', and he had since demonstrated his usefulness at Timaru and Plumpton.

, Field Gun, who has not always run up to expectations, succeeded m beatin? a. moderate field; at Christchurch last Saturday. When All Guns won the first race nothing could stop punters from backing Field Gun, so the Hotohkiss horse returned the moderate price of £2 4s.

Mr S. B. Joel won m bets alone about £100,000 when Polymelus beat his 19 opponents m the Cambridgeshire Stakes (says the London "Sportsman"). The stroke of luck by which this was made possible is simply amazing. The great event all seems to have turped on the incident m the sale ring at Newmarket about a month before, when Mr Faber lost a fortune m selling the horse for 4200 guineas and Mr Sol Joel made one by buying it. For following on that business transaction Polymelus proceeded to win the Duke, of York Stakes, worth m value nearly £2000; he hereby landed a very large amount m bets for his new owner (the starting price was 7 to 4 against) ; he won the Champion Stakes of £900 at Newmarket during the Cesarewitch meeting ; and then came the crowning prize of all— the Cambridgeshire Stakes. The horse looks like winning valuable races next year, while, of course, his stud prospects are enhanced tremendously by rocent events.

Percy Mason, who wenb to Sydney m charge of Royal Glen and Captain Shannon, returned by the Warrimoo on Wednesday. In conversation he reported that the horses arrived well and took up quarters m F. McGrath's stoble.

In regard to the case of a man named H hides, who laid a wager £6 to 2s nn the Feilding double, with a barmaid at the Clarendon Hotel, as reported m last week's "Truth," we understand that the debt was paid on Monday last. The explanation of the delay m makinpt a settlement wjs that there was another man working the double with Hindes, and that he failed to come to light at the proper time. Whatever, the cause, the caustic comments made by "Truth" on the deal were fully justified, although, wishing to be absolutely fair, publicity is now given to the fact that the amount owing has been paid iri full.

Anent MenschikoG's display m the Sandown Cup the Melbourne "Truth" has the following : "Menschikoff now looks a deal cleaner m condition than he has done since he has been m Australia and for three-fourths of the journey he looked like winning the Sandown Cup all the way. When he compounded he, however, did so . very suddenly, but the. run should do him gocd, and if he keeps- well, he may directly put an end to the long run of "outs" that has attended the inmates of A. West's stable. It is no joke getting a stallion that, has beeiv at the stud for sdm__ year?tinto rae-. iriej shape again, aiiSTft cannot -be ; done iii five minutes, but it is quite certain that Menschikoff retains! -/the greater part of his once most brilliant turn of foot, and the ability to stay should follow."
