DRIVERS' WAGES.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— Would you kindly let me know' through you* valuable columns if the Arbitration Court award m respect, to drivers of vehicles "extends throughout the country districts, or only applies to the large centres. In our little borough of Levin, situated only sixty miles from 'Wellington, we have an evil state of affairs existing. A company- formed recently, consisting of several moriied men of the district, and known .as the Levin Express Co., are paying disgraceful wages to both married and single men, ranging; from. 2-5s to 35s a week for drivers of one, two and three horse teams. They also have to work frdm ten to twelve hours a day and receive- no overtime. Now, Sir, this company, as naturally, follows,- can afford, by paying low wajsjes, to do work very much cheaper than the small man, thus wiping him -out of existence, and creating a monopoly. Hoping you will find space for this letter as a protest against a rotten state of affairs.— I am, &c L.L. Levin, December.
