LUCKY WILLIAM.
Some People Have all the Luck! An example of this was shown at Auckland Supreme Court last week. A cove named William Henry Thomas was there boxed for the purpose of answering a charge of mixing up . a £20 note with his own money. The first stroke of luck to come .William's wav occurred oh July 2 last. He was living at Buckland at the time and proposed taking a spell m Auckland. So. like a good chap, he looked m upon the Buckland storekeeper, a Mr Porter, and, explaining that he was goinc to town, asked if he could execute any commissions for him. Whereupon, the storekeeper, with a trustfulness m his fellow-men which is sublime m its way, forked out an envelope • containing a £2° n ote and asked Thomas to drop it at the National Bank at Auckland. What lucfo! The holiday-maker hied him to Auckfand straightaway, and there, according to him,, he had a beautiful bout of drinking. More luck ! What was somewhat unfortunate was the fact that during the process of PAINTING THE TOWN SCARLET, William Henry lost the note. He alleges that he was robbed of it, but a hard-hearted Crown Prosecutor alleged that he used it to buy the red paint with. William . Henry hotly denied this, saying he got drunk on his own money. He had been m New Zealand 19 years and never been m trouble before. He -sang iii the choir at Buckland, and, according to his version, had led an altogether angelic life prior to the Auckland bout. He went to New Plymouth instead of returning and told Porter he had lost his money. because he thought his story would not be believed. That the errinc Thomas' faith m mankind's believing powers was incorrect, was proved by his getting twe.lve good men and true to find him not guilty, and he was discharged. Which was the crownin 1 * noint of this thirsty chorister's good fortune.
