MULCTED MONKLEY.
A "LOST" LAWYER.
A Solicitorial Stowaway.
Temperance Toiler who Back-slid.
Before Magistrate Isaacs, at the Water Police Court yesterday morning (says our Sydney issue of Nov. 11), Percy Monkley, 36, solicitor, was charged wi^h stowing away aboard the steamer Zealandia, coming from Auckland to Sydney, with the object of avoiding payment of fare, £3 15s. : .
As Chief Officer Stone was proceeding to tell how Monkley had been discovered at sea without a ticket, accused, speaking like a practised hand, said :
"I pleaid guilty, but would like to be allowed to make a little explanation. It is true I was on the boat, but I HAD NO INTENTION whatever to get on her. I held a good nosition at Auckland, and I intended to go up and spend the Christmas with my father, but, unfortunately, last Monday I took a few drinks . and ' forgot everything. For years I have taken part m temperance work, and I explained the facts to the captain. The people with whom I have been boarding will wondar what has become of me."
Serpeant Parkinson : Your Worship, accused said a gentleman from'Parramatta was coming down to go surety for his fare. He made no statement like that to the wolice.
His Worship : I 'must fine you £7 10s, as the company is entitled to half of it, and the fine must cover their fare.
WHEN CAN YOU PAY ?
Accused : If I were m Auckland I could get it easily, but I would rather not make any definite promise. Your Worship, I have been m confinement since the boat arrived yesterday, and after all that it would be very hard to h* iv " to go into confinement again. A month was allowed to pay.
