THE UNDER-CUTTING CHOW.
Armidale (N.S.W.) "Times" o£ a recent date contained the following little story of the ways of the gentle Chow, and as the yellow devils loom large m New Zealand it is worth republishing :— Mudgee, which has produced some persons and things of note, nearly produoad, the other day, an amazing slaughter of Chinese. Two followers of Joss had contracted to ringbark 15,000 acres at Is 5d an acre. The pair got 11 other Chows to join them m the undertaking. They finished the job, and, although they has a trifle over £700 to take, the bosses believed m private enterprise, and proposed to take Id an acre (£62 10s) as commission before starting the general division. The other eleven -declared themselves Socialists to a -pigtail. All thirteen heathens spoke to the q.ue.ii icn at the same time. . Argument failing, they seized their axes, and Mudgee was within an ace of seems: 13 Chinamen slaying each other with tomahawks, ahd deluging the town with gore. At the critical moment the police and , a lawyer arrived. The police were, willing "to arrest the whole crowd, and the lawyer was willing to take un the case and fight it out as long as there was a penny left: Then the economy of the Chow character r-'hono forth. The yellow men wers willing to shed. th?ir blood for that Id an acre, but they weren't going to shed any Costs. They laid flown their axes, ar.d hurriedly arrived at an agreement m their own language, and peace supervened.
