Gold and Culture.
Freedom would seem to gather vigor m frosty atmospheres. From the latest account of Iceland, the well-educated men and women of Great Britain would find themselves easily surpassed m general culture by the leaders of Icelandic society, ! whose interest m world history has made them keen critics of contemporary nations. A knowledge of five or ten languages is common among the students, while the general system of education is so thorough that its responsible authorities declare it one of the finest m the World— Denmark perhaps running it most closely. The women of Iceland, also, we are told, have more civil rights than any other nation has yet bestowed, and a vigorous agitation 13 on foot to extend the franchise, which they already possess m all civil affairs, to the election for the national Parliament
