ARGENTINE CANNED MEAT.
It was thought that the Chicago Revelations would prove a. big boom for Argentine and Australian canned meats m Great Britain. The Argentine, however, appears to be coming m for some hard knocks from people, who pretend they know all about it. The following is a specimen letter of many appearing m the English press at present. It 13 dated from Buenos Ayres, August 10th. The writer aa'ys:—
"I hatfe read with much interest the letter m your issue of' July 8, which has just arrived m the ttiver t late, signed by 'British ned meat question. I agree with most of what he states, having Worked m. the canning department of a factory m this country. Many glowing accounts have been sent to England as to the veterinary inspection being perfect. I can truthfully state that on many occasions the veterinary inspector did not arrive until the morning's killing was practically finished, and some days did- not attend at all. I have known an instance where a carcase 'condemned by the inspector was canned."
"The post I held was foreman m one branch of the canning department. Many of the workmen were of a filthy class, and their habits were equally disgusting. I have seen them, whilst chewing tobacco— smoking being prohibited— spit upon the meat. As for personal cleanliness, it was an unknown quantity. Long before the Chicago exposures, I wrote home to friends m England, telling them of what I had seen, and to be aware of Argentine, tinned meat."
Australian factories had better keep a sharp eye on their reputation, or they will not benefit as expected by the Chicago meat scandals.
