WALTER'S WORK.

Under the Will of McDnff.

/A somewhat unusual case of alleged false presences was called on at the Christchurch Police Court lately. Detectives\ Ward and Bishop arrested a man pf^-ybout 33, named Walter

Evans, on a charge that he did, between the Ist and the 30th of September, at Christchurch, obtain the sum of £15 from one Ada Campbell by falsely representing that he was obtaining for her a sum of money that had been bequeathed to her by one McDufi , of America. On being brought before the magistrate the accused, who is credited by the polioe with possessing an alias m the name of Williams, a remand was applied for and granted. Next time the gentleman (who parts his flaxen locks carefully m the middle) breasted the bar Chief-Detective Chrystal rose and asked for a further adjournment, and intimated that he later, on was goings to apply for another after that, the reason being that the police required time, to send -to 'Murka for information relative to the party named McDufi and his alleged will. This brought Lawyer Hoban to his feet m hot protest. He objected to all these remands, and said accused desired the case to be proceeded with right away. It was the inherent right of every accused person to have his guilt or innocence determined as soon as possible. In the present case the accused entered an emphatic denial to the charge. Too many remands were being asked for, and the court shouldn't allow that sort of thing, to go on. It would be a very serious thing to lodge a man m gaol for six months or more while information was being procured from America. The law never contemplated anything of that sort ; it, was unfair for a man to have the terror of the law hanging over his head for such a period. , Magistrate Day asked where the complainant was, the Chief 'Tec replying that she was m town. Eventally one more remand was granted, and Evans comes up again this Saturday. He is out on bail m one surety of £75, so that he is not "lodged m gaol." The complainant, Annie Campbell is a nurse m the city, the accused being m a small way.
