BRITISH STUD NEWS.
A prominent Australian owner and breeder now on a trip to England has very kindly sent tile writer some very interesting notes on his visits to the stud farms m the old country, and the following extracts will be read with general interest:— "At Lord Rosebery's stud farm at Mentmore I saw Ladas, who is showing signs of old age, and is insured for 20,000 guineas; also Apennine (dam of . the recently imported stallion Chiron), and about 20 other mares. Gas (half-sister to Ladas) has a most beautiful filly, sister to Cicero, .and Chelandry, a great mare herself, and half-sister to Ladas, is the dam of Traqoair (the best -two-year-old m England), who is by Ayrshire, son of Hampton. The Duke of 'Westminster has the finest lot o& mares m any one stud m tho world ab Eaton Hail.- "Vampire (dam of Flying Fox), m foal to William the Third, is the bestand finest mare I ever saw. She has not the b(\->b of tempers, and strangers are not allowed in' the paddock with her, and at foaling time they all have to look out. Then there is Ornament (the dam of Sceptre), with a foal by William the Third. I suppose you edukl not place a value on these two liwrutf :~F»X'." have returned over £100.-000 vCqJBbksr^^j.. ; Eydal (dam of Rydal I&mO^^ k , vu " dam of TroutbeclO is^u^^^y^ UniJ .. He says he is "a better yearling than Flying Fox was, quitedifferent m conformation to Flying Lemur another brother, who was sold at the Newl market First July Meeting for 7500 guineas and died the following week insured for 8000 guineas. This is a lengthy colt but I think will be tricky; he is named 'Vamose ' and the filly Tflowsali.' I saw Orme who is looking well, but I must say I was disappointed m him; ho is very strongly built but very short, and I think one of the shortest from hip to hock I ever saw Tho present Duke of Westminster bought" him from the trustees of the lato Duke for 50,000 guineas, the record price f or a thoroughbred." ;
