Regarding Hydrant's running at Rosehill on Saturday week Sydney "Sportsman" has this to. say: "New Zealand jumpers, taking them all round, are much superior to those of this State, consequently when Hydrant appeared amongst the list of starters m the- Hurdle Race at Rosehill on Saturday, punters got their bit on. Cardross, who had. the services of J. Montgomery m the saddle, found plenty of , support, and he was a better favqrite than, the New Zealander "at the close of .operations. Hydrant was ridden m a most erratic " fashion, especially over the concluding six furlongs, while from . the distance his rider, Stewart, never allowed the- chestnut his head, and the gilding eyefitually-* finished- Second under a str4.iri.lt appeared a palpable rook that should never,'- have passed the stewards', observ^tioh.y At. pony meet'ines . where there are ,no paid stewards, such glaring cases are; expected w;hile it's 'all in,' or apparently so-'* but at 'registerefl" meetings public expect some protection-' fronv being openly rooked."
