A Pug and His Walloper Fall In.

; J A* most amusing incident occurred on Saturday evening, the l^th July, .at Mossman, 14 miles from Port Douglas, the extreme northern point of sugar cultivation m Queensland. ■A 10-round glove fight had been arranged for,, but owing to the small audience the two intending combatants stated that they would only fight four rounds* On hearing this atinounoemant a cane^rower from Saltwater jocularly remarked that, under the circumstances, tfhe audience should have half the admission money returned to .them.- Thereupon one of the 'two pugilists replied that, as -the cane J grower had so much to say, perhaps he would not mind putting up./ a fivfr-pound note, and. stepping into the ring himself. This the Saltwater man did, and after knocking the pugilist outside the. ropes was awarded the fight on a foul, and received a £10 note. He 'took, a- crowd Of his friends over to Kirwan's Hotel to shoutffor them,',but on passing the note over the bar counter, was told that it was valueless. Besides losing the £5, he had the drinks to pay for the crowd. Doubtless the challenge and the easy beating was 'all part of the • travelling pug's scheme for getting a good fiver for his cronk tenner.
