Mrs. Uncle Sam Gets a Baby.
The "Fill your Cradles" speech of President Roosevelt has had the effect of making baby popular m A-merioa, and Society dames have discarded the pet poodle for the infant m swaddling clothes. In many cases, however, ttie charming infants are not the progeny of the supposed doting mother, but of poorer parents, who find a lucrative source of income m hiring out specially fine babies to Society women who wish to ' obtain ( the glory of motherhood without any, 'of its pains and responsibilities, with the additional advantage that when babies go out of fashion* theirs can die— that is go back to their real parents-=-witbout causing any grief or inconvenience. Some, women are already planning magnificent funerals m which the alleged corpse will be at home with its parents instead of being m a coffin. As for the authorities, well, dollars can doa lot m New York. Judging by the frequency of adyts. m the New Zealand daily press, wanting some- kind person to adopt a fine, healthy boy, our own Society dames ♦will not experience much difficulty m securing babies when the craze strikes these 'isles.
