THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF COMMITTEES.
The latest information obtainable up to the time of going to press last night, as to the probable destination of the position of Chairman of Committees, points to the chances of either Messrs Symes or R. McKenzie obtaining this Parliamentary plum. The strength of the' "Country Party" is responsible for the sudden freezing out of Mr Wilford, whose chances were considered very .rosy, earlier inthe week. Sir William Jukes Steward is "third favorite," to -speak m sporting phraseology,, The country party is acquiring quite a formidable array, now numbering 26 members, with Mr-C. E. Major as. acknowledged leader. At. a meeting held during the week a committee of : five was appointed to watch the interests of the party. These were Messrs R. McKenzie,- Graham,. Field, Hone Heke and Major - the latter chairman. Mr A... W. Rutherford will act as Whip to- the party. Mr Major had strong offers of support for the seat as Chairman- of-Committees, but! declined to° stand.
