MAORIS IN BRILLIANT FORM
| DEFEAT FRENCH FIFTEEN FINE PLAY BY PHILLIPS. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. BORDEAUX, December 5. Twelve thousand people saw the Maoris, by brilliant play, defeat a selected French fifteen by 13 points to 9. The match marked the resumption of the Maoris’ French tour. The weather was fine, and the ground dry. Franco failed to take advantage of a free-kick against the Maoris for ob- • struction. The Maoris resumed their -attack, and Phillips dropped a brilliant goal. Villa replied with a try, which was unconverted. Jaurreguy, who was a pillar of strength, narrowly missed putting the Frenchmen ahead. Pelham added another unconverted try. The Maoris’ defence withstood a vigorous attack, and they were leading at half-time by 7 points to 3. Jaurreguy ran brilliantly, but was pulled down, and a general weakness in the French defence enabled Falwasser to score a try after :.a brilliant run, which Jaurreguy almost stopped. The tourists again attacked, and despite Dumanoir’s fine, defence, added their third converted try, after strong and fast running, and speedy breaking up. Phillips was the outstanding player. France’s best were Jaurreguy, Dumanoir, and Graciet.
