AGREEMENT REACHED

REGARDING SHOW SITE , NEW SCHOOL TO BENEFIT PLAY AREA FREE OF COST A conference was held yesterday morning on the John street site by Messrs T, Forsyth (chairman), G. L. Stewprt (secretary), and G. Powell architect),'-representing the Wellington Education Board; and Messrs It. IT. Nimmo (chairman), O. Mitchell (manager), representing tiie Winter ShowAssociation, when the association’s proposes as they affected the proposed new school near the show site were reviewed. After a full and friendly discussion a complete understanding was arrived at. The points for discussion were:— (1) Playing areas. (2) Dumping ground for spoil from school building site. > (3) The question of Obscuring the sun from the school building. Subject to confirmation by the council, the Education Board, and the Show Association, the association’s representatives offered to make the lower playing area available as a school playground ; to give facilities for the dis- ‘ posal of spoil from the board’s section, and to make any adjustments necessaiy and possible in regard to the third point. Subject to an agreement being reached in regard to No. 3, the Show Association’s representatives understand the Education Board’s representatives will place no obstacles in the way of the Winter Show Association’s proposals. AN IMPORTANT QUESTION Mr Mitchell, from whom the above information was obtained, made the following statement also : Tho chairman (Mr U. H. Nimmo) desires me to state that the matter brought up by Mr Forsyth, M.P. (chairman of the Education Board), was a very important one, and we are grateful it was ventilated early so’that any necessary adjustments could be made to meet the board’s wishes. We also appreciate the spirit of goodwill and helpfulness in which the matters were eiscussed on the ground. The playing area which we propose will he bigger and safer than, and superior in every way to that originally proposed by the Education Board, which was on a, high bank near the road. The new ground will be approximately 120 yards long, connected direct with the school site. ‘ It will be levelled and laid out by the association. The school, therefore, will have the use of a better ground free of oast than is possessed by any other school in the city, outside of Wellington College. The area, subject to confirmation by the bodies concerned, was offered to the Education Board for'a children’s playground. OUT TO HELP The association’s representatives alsoagreed to give whatever facilities they could for the disposal of the spoil from the school site. In regard to obscuring the sun from the sohool buildings, we have agreed to place the show building SO feet away from the boundary. As the building is to bo only one story high, it is not thought the sun will be in any way obscured from the sohool. We are convinced that our activities at John street will be a decided advantage to the school, and give it playing facilities not' possible if it had to rely on Government expenditure. On behalf of the chairman ahd members of the Show Association—and I am sure I can speak also for the Manufacturers’ Association-—I wish to thank Mr Forsyth and his colleagues for the goodwill shown, and the opportunity of again demonstrating that we are out to help in every possible way.
