NEARLY LOST
MISHAP ON MONOWAI HULK SAVED "FROM SINKING. Per Press Association. GISBORNE, December 4. The hulk Monowai, which is being prepared for sinking shortly as a protective breakwater, was nearly prematurely sunk yesterday, just prior to knoefcing-o fftime. A plate dropped and broke the seacock, iiic vessel was lying five miles from port, and assistance was immediately sent. A gang worked continuously until 4-39 this morning, a series of pumps being used to keep the water down till the repairs were effected. The vessel is now sate. Had she sunk salvage would have been impossible, as only tho bare shell remains and is loaded with stone. Heavy seas were running, and tho harbour launch, which went out yesterday, was unable to return till today. Other shipping was interfered with, and forty feet of the retaining wall at the mouth of the river diversion was demolished. Further damage of a minor nature was also reported.
