SOME CRISP BATTING BADCOCK AGAIN BOWLS WELL. Thorndon met Kilbirnie at the Kilbirnie Reserve on Saturday. Kortlang, captain of Thorndon, won the toss from Armstrong, and elected to bat, sending Gibson and Roberts to the wickets to face the bowling of Bramley and Badcock. In Badcock’s second-over he dismissed Roberts, who was replaced by Kortlang. After compiling a useful 26, Kortlang fell a victim to Armstrong, and his place was taken by Mason. Gibson and his new partner continued to add to the total until Holz, a promoted junior, clean-bowled the former. Phillips was associated with Mason in a short partnership, and the former managed to compile 11 before ho was caught and bowled by Morris. Foley filled the vacancy, but only added one to the total, before be was sent back to the pavilion. Ellerm joined Mason, only to see the latter step in front of a ball from Badcock. - Caulton, the next man in, was dismissed by Badcock with his total at 7. Hyder was partnered with Ellerm, but failed to open his account, falling to another Ibw from Badcock. E. Foley joined Ellerm, who was still playing confidently, but he was unlucky, for after compiling 68, he was caught by Christopherson off Badcock. Foley played very attractive cricket and it was only after he had made 46, that he was bowled by Holz. Bull was the not-ont man. Thorndon’s first innings closed for 254. THORNDON. First Innings. A BATSMEN’S WICKET MIDLAND’S FINE SCORE WELLINGTON OPEN WELL. Winning the toss in their match with Wellington, Midland elected to take first strike and avail themselves of the advantage of the batsmen’s wicket on the Lower Hutt Recreation Ground. Batting up till shortly after 5.45 o'clock, they ran up a formidable total of 289, compiled principally by Purvey (61), J. Hutchings (50), A. Donegliue (47), and Judd (29 not out). Turvey played a forceful and pretty innings, and placed the bowlers confidently all round the wicket, until run out as the result of an unfortunate mistake. His innings included nine fours, and his last-wicket stand with Judd added over 50 runs to the total. Hiddleston was the most successful trundler of the day. and captured four wickets for the loss of 71 runs. Hiddleston and Airey opened the batting for Wellington at 6 o’clock, the former facing the bowling of Cleverley, and opening his account with a boundary and a single. Judd went on at the opposite e'nd, and runs came slowly, the batsmen treating the deliveries sent down witli the utmost respect. The score was hoisted after quarter of an hour, and when stumps were drawn 52 had been registered, with the partnership still going strongly. Hiddleston was settling down to his game nicely, and in making 38 delighted the spectators with his welltimed shots, particularly his legglances.
